Vet Prep Semester

Medical Math

  • Was taught this course by Dr. Shokry.  Fairly easy class and it is a great introduction to pharmacology and toxicology (save your book for reference and for additional math problems in these courses, both of which Dr. Shokry teaches you again in later semesters).  He is always ready to help students understand the material.  It is a lot of calculations, conversions, and crazy cool information about toxic plants/commonly used medications/etc.
Veterinary Terminology

  • Dr. McNally was the professor for this course at the time.  She was very organized and the course was straightforward.  I appreciated this course because of the structure (taught a lot of terminology based on the system such as urinary, reproductive, etc.) and help in breaking down unknown medical terminology.

Physiology

  • Dr. Reich is the professor teaching this course.  The rumors are true!  Hahaha.  He is a very excellent teacher and you will learn so much and everything that you are taught will be seen again in later courses (ie. nutrition, physiology, etc.).  The one catch is that his exams are definitely challenging.  This is not a class you want to memorize and regurgitate information.  You really need to have a fully developed understanding of all concepts taught and if you don't understand them, go see him in his office hours and get the help!  This class prepares you for his Physiology II exam structure in your 2nd semester (but it is still challenging even then!).

Microbiology

  • Dr. Gyimah is the professor for this course.  He gets to introduce virology and immunology to you all in one course.  Read his notebook he provides (and do so several times!) and pay attention in class.  He really likes when students come to him for help and are proactive about their performance in the class.

Study Skills

  • Dr. Sandquist is the course coordinator and teaches you every once in a while, but mostly you will have a variety of professors/staff/etc. come and speak to you about a very wide variety of information.  This class is all about participation and kind of a no brainer, so enjoy!  The information that the lecturers give will be about research opportunities, lab animal medicine, St. Kitts and its people, the St. Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network and research opportunities with the sea turtles, etc. etc.
